U.S. VETS Receives $700K to Provide Services to Veteran Families in Los Angeles and Las Vegas

Under the new Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program, U.S.VETS has been awarded a $700,000 grant to provide more supportive services to very low-income Veteran families.

In Los Angeles, U.S.VETS has been awarded $500,000 and will be partnering with two local service providers, Beyond Shelter and Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, to offer these services. Working together, U.S.VETS and partners will assist low and very-low income Veteran families in Los Angeles transition to permanent housing and ensure that Veteran families occupying permanent housing who are at risk of homelessness are able to maintain their homes.  U.S.VETS hopes to provide supportive services to 120 very-low income Veteran families in Los Angeles over the course of a year.

Similarly in Las Vegas, U.S.VETS has received $200,000 and will be partnering with Family Promise, Women’s Development Center, and HopeLink to provide housing to at least 60 families annually. These partnerships and programs mark an important transition for U.S.VETS, as the organization has typically served single veterans.

Estimates for Veteran homelessness have dropped in the past five years from 313,000 in 2003 to 107,000 in 2009. However, despite the success of VA Homeless Programs and its community partners, to end Veteran homelessness, Veteran service providers must continue to assist families transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing and prevent at-risk families from becoming homeless. U.S.VETS is proud to be a part of this process.
