Staff and WCC residents were thrilled to participate in this very special anniversary, which included music provided by The Royal Hawaiian Band, keynote speaker, VP Programs Darryl Vincent, as well as many wonderful performances by groups comprised of current and former facility residents. The audience was treated to a “Voyage around the islands of Polynesia,” featuring heart-warming performances beginning with our very own WCC preschoolers, as well as traditional dances from the Hawaiian, American Samoan, Chuukese, and Marshallese communities, and “Cardio Jam” and “Break Dance” routines.
Other highlights included a former client success story, and receipt of four Proclamations- one presented by City Council Member Tom Berg, one from Representative Jo Jordan on behalf of the Hawaii State Legislature, House & Senate, one on behalf of Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle’s office as well as one from the Hawaii State Governor’s Office on behalf of Governor Neil Abercrombie; WCC was also gifted with precious “Kalo” (taro plants), received following Hawaiian traditional protocol of receiving the gift with an “oli” (chant), which acknowledged the precious gift of 20 plants. The event culminated with a wonderful luau feast (many items prepared on site by WCC residents) served by community volunteers.
The event was a true representation of the sense of community lived at WCC on a daily basis. We are looking forward to the next five years!
