The 2nd Annual Female Stand Down was held in Los Angeles in July. Women from all branches of service gathered at the USC campus to meet with their fellow sisters-in-arms and get support from U.S.VETS and community partners.
The Stand Down offered a wide range of services to female veterans of all ages, including medical, dental, and vision clinics, legal consultation, and employment workshops. Women were also given the chance to pick up some clothing and personal items, to get pampered in the beauty parlor, and to watch a fashion show of professional attire.
The Female Stand Down was hosted by U.S.VETS – Long Beach, where the ADVANCE Women’s Program offers female veterans assistance and support specific to their needs. The program provides a safe and sober living environment, focused counseling for women with sexual trauma, employment assistance, substance abuse treatment, as well as aid for women with children.
Although women account for an increasing percentage of the military (currently about 14% of active duty, 18% of reserves, and 20% of new recruits are women), there are few resources specifically for female veterans once they return home. U.S.VETS’ Female Stand Down provided a crucial service to the brave women who have honored us all with their service.
