Every year 300,000 service members on average leave the military. With the Army and Marine Corps projected to cut nearly 100,000 troops by 2017, potentially there’ll be 500,000 new veterans who will be rejoining civilian society each year.

Spending a few years in the military can make a person accustomed to a highly structured lifestyle in which others make decisions, while food, clothing and shelter are provided by the organization. Stepping out of that situation and back into the far less disciplined life of a civilian is a stressful undertaking for many veterans, and it can sometimes cause them to make foolish choices. A program called Outside the Wire is aimed at helping veterans struggling with the transition to civilian life.
Homeless male veterans are often plagued by a sense of hopelessness and a feeling that the country they defended has now abandoned them. One organization that aims to change that scenario is the U.S. Veterans Initiative (U.S. Vets), which currently manages 11 veterans-assistance centers throughout the United States.
According to the most recent U.S. Veterans Administration (V.A.) statistics, on any given night in 2009, more than 75,000 U.S. veterans were homeless. In that same year, more than 136,000 veterans experienced homelessness at least temporarily.
