Prescott, Arizona
U.S. VETS - Prescott has 65 beds available for homeless veterans On January 16, 2003, U.S. Vets opened its first rural site in Prescott, Arizona. Since that time we've served hundreds of homeless veterans. We offer housing, case management, and employment assistance to hundreds of homeless veterans in Northern Arizona. Our career center has placed over 70% of our veterans in competitive employment. The outreach team visits the parks, forests, and shelters throughout the area to offer our services and make veterans aware of our program. In addition to the services we provide the vets in our program we also provide hot showers, access to our laundry room, and use of the career center to any veteran in the community. This is the only U.S.VETS site located on VA property, at the historic Fort Whipple VA Medical Center. This partnership with the VA provides our veterans with easy access to health care, mental health services, vocational rehabilitation, and educational programs like Upward Bound. Being located in a rural market means U.S. Vets faces different challenges and barriers than many other service providers located in large metropolitan areas. Some of our veterans have lived in the forest for as long as thirty years, while others are completing their master's degrees at local colleges. Like all other U.S. Vets sites, the community has taken notice of the difference we make and strongly supports our mission. Recent additions to this program include 7 units of permanent housing for homeless disabled veterans scattered throughout the community of Prescott. Award winning poet on site Larry Bombard entered the 11th Annual Whipple Voices Writing Festival and won the top award in the Humor category with his poem, "The Best Cowboy" and the top award in the Patriotism Category with his poem, "You Don't Want to Know Us." Both of these poems were also published in a book that the V.A. puts put every year after the festival. Larry with his words paints a picture of what many of our vets are going through. Veteran serves fellow vets in AmeriCorps Jim Holzmann, (photo on right) veteran, and former AmeriCorps Member, stands outside the office of the U.S. Vets Initiative, which offers veterans housing and help in finding full-time employment.
