Celebrating Our 20th Anniversary
A message from
President and CEO of U.S.VETS
In May of 1993, U.S.VETS brought five Vietnam veterans into our first site in Inglewood, California. These men had been living on the street, under overpasses and in tunnels. Twenty years later, U.S.VETS provides housing and services to more than 5,000 male and female veterans and their families each year. The experience we gained working with our earliest clients is now focused on helping the newest generation of returning veterans.
Since we first opened twenty years ago, we have grown to 11 sites in 6 states and the District of Columbia. Each day we provide 3,000 veterans with housing, case management, employment assistance, job placement and counseling. U.S.VETS works with veterans to help the individual regain their sense of purpose, and return to their loved ones and to society.
We approach this landmark with a great deal of humility. In the last 20 years we have provided services to more homeless veterans than any other agency in the country, yet there are still more than 60,000 veterans in America who have no place to lay their head at night. We are painfully aware of the many veterans who are unemployed, who suffer silently with combat trauma, or live under the poverty line one step away from homelessness.
And today we are dealing with a new generation of men and women returning from battle. As of last September, more than 1.6 million military members who’d been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan had transitioned to veteran status, and another 34,000 will return by February of 2014. Our work continues; we have a new generation to serve.
We are proud to take on the challenge, and look forward to continuing our mission.
