Last week, U.S.VETS – Las Vegas hosted the 6th annual “Honoring Those Who Serve” Benefit Dinner at the Aliante Casino + Hotel. Four hundred guests attended and enjoyed a delicious dinner and live music. Guests also participated in an exciting live and silent auction for prizes such as hotel stays, show tickets, airfare and historical tours of Washington D.C., an all-inclusive travel package to beautiful Hawaii, and this year’s featured prize a patriotic hand painted canvas created live at the event! The event was a memorable celebration honoring veterans and the military while raising $84,000 to support the Las Vegas site’s programs for homeless and at-risk veterans.
The event also highlighted the service of local heroes in Southern Nevada. The following Local Hero Awards were presented for their service to veterans and the military within the community:
Local Civilian Heroes
Mayor Andy Hafen
Local Veteran Hero
Local Organization Heroes
MGM Resorts International Veteran Employee Network Group
Nellis Air Force Base Public Health Clinic
USO Las Vegas
Fox5 News came out to talk to Executive Director Shalimar Cabrera and some of our veteran clients about the event:
Navy veteran Gregory Anderson knows just how beneficial the dollars raised at the event are. Nine years ago he was down on his luck and had nowhere to turn to while going through disability.
“[The] goodness of U.S.VETS, it allowed me to not be on the street, to have three square meals a day,” Anderson said.
Anderson has been with the program for nine years. He now lives in permanent housing and works a full-time job. He said many other vets are struggling like he once was and have a very hard time getting back on their feet.
“PTSD, the horrific fighting the vets go through, it’s just mind-blowing, and the mental state alone is just unbelievable,” Anderson said.
