On Saturday November 10th, U.S.VETS – Phoenix hosted their celebration of Veterans Day for all residents of the Victory campus. Over 100 veterans came out to hear the Mayor Greg Stanton talk about new hiring initiatives he has started for veterans. The Mayor shook hands and spoke personally with our veterans after his remarks, taking the time to thank them for their service to our country.
Phoenix VA Director Sharon Helman also spoke at the event. Director Helman shared her thoughts about Veterans Day, and thanked the veterans for their service, stating that until every day is like Veterans Day, her job at the VA will not be finished. After the opening ceremony Brookfield and the Arizona Relocation Alliance sponsored an Italian dinner, lots of BINGO and prizes, as well as a karaoke competition.
A Marine Corps cake cutting ceremony followed a reading from General John A. Lejeuene. In keeping with Marine Corps tradition, the oldest and youngest Marine in attendance participated in the cake cutting; the oldest passed the first piece to the youngest, signifying passing of knowledge. This was followed by a spirited singing of the Marine Hymn by all Marines in attendance. The fun lasted through the night and a good time was had by all.
