10th Anniversary Celebration at U.S.VETS – Barbers Point

On Friday, December 6th, U.S.VETS – Barber’s Point had their 10th Anniversary celebration on site. It was truly a momentous evening for community supporters, veterans in the program, and family and friends to come together and celebrate the accomplishments of the site and to those veterans who have successfully transitioned out of the program.

The evening started with live music played by veterans in the VIP (Veterans-in-Progress) program, the presentation of colors by the Hawaii Youth Challenge Academy, and an a capella performance of The National Anthem. The highlight of the evening was guest speaker and COO, Darryl Vincent, who is credited with starting the Barbers Point site, and who has been a support for the site every step of the way these past 10 years. He highlighted the newest U.S.VETS program that will be soon opening in Washington D.C. by saying, “I grew up ten minutes away from the U.S.VETS location,” he said. “I went to high school there. It’s very meaningful to me to be able to bring services to veterans in the neighborhood where I grew up, to build a program in a community which I am very close to. It’s all come full circle for me.”

A special recognition was then given to Darryl and Executive Director, Dr. Kim Cook from Mark Takai, representing The House of Representatives of the Twenty- Seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, who on their behalf congratulated the UNITED STATES VETERANS INITATIVE – Barber’s Point on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of its Veterans-in-Progress Program. Representative Takai extended its warmest aloha and best wishes for the site’s continued success in all future endeavors.

Thank you to everyone who came to help us celebrate our anniversary and to those who had a good laugh from the closing annual talent show hosted by the veterans in our program, staff, and community supporters! The staff also want to sincerely thank every supporter that has contributed to the success of U.S.VETS – Barber’s Point these last 10 years. Every supporter and veteran has had an impact on the site’s mission.
