Helping veterans find employment is one of the cornerstones of U.S.VETS. In addition to Career Development Initiative (CDI), which directly connects veteran job seekers with employers, and our workforce and employment programs for residential clients, we also host job fairs to reach more people in the community looking to hire or looking for work.
On April 12, U.S.VETS – Barber’s Point hosted our 8th annual job fair in Honolulu. This year, to expand networking opportunities even further than ever before, we invited the general public to attend the job fair, rather than limiting it to veterans. This led to increased participation from local businesses, who knew they would have an even wider pool of interested candidates. Nearly 60 employers signed up to participate – 50% more than anticipated – which meant expanding the job fair to accommodate them all. Over 150 job seekers came to meet with recruiters, and several landed immediate interviews at the fair.
In addition to hosting, U.S.VETS also participated as an employer. Our HR specialist, program manager, and outreach team spoke with job candidates about opportunities at our organization, and were able to successfully two open positions. Both individuals hired are veterans themselves who are beginning their civilian careers after separating from the military, and their experience and insight will make them invaluable members of the team and foster fantastic camaraderie with our clients.
Many thanks to partners such as the VA, Home Depot, and Par Hawaii, Inc. who joined hands with us in supporting this highly successful event. This was the biggest job fair Barber’s Point has ever hosted, and we hope to grow even more next year.
