Meet a Veteran: Lionel

 In Barbers Point, Success Stories

LionelMy name is Lionel and I served in the United States Army from 1973-1977, then re-enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1977-1985. Upon transitioning into the civilian lifestyle, I found myself not able to make ends meet. Eventually I had so few resources, I was living in my car, under a bridge at the Honolulu Airport.

Thanks to the support of staff and my fellow soldiers, I decided that I wanted a better life for myself and for my family. I first came to U.S.VETS in September 2013, and have been back two more times since. Upon entry to U.S.VETS, I was really no different than anyone else in the program. I learned that help comes from many different sources.

Through the Workforce program, I was able to take a job readiness course that prepared me for employment opportunities. I attended a variety of classes, from resume building to interviewing skills.

I was able to complete my employment development plan, with the goal of finding permanent employment, and I opened a savings account. U.S.VETS helped me with employment and finding housing. I now live in an apartment in Honolulu and work full time at Reynolds Recycling. I was encouraged often by the staff to try anything that would help improve myself. For this, I am grateful for U.S.VETS and their services.
