Phoenix Stand Down

 In Events, Phoenix

IMG_5911On March 8th, U.S.VETS-Phoenix participated in the Arizona annual Stand Down for Veterans at the Arizona Fairgrounds in Phoenix, AZ.

U.S.VETS-Phoenix provided all the assessments for veterans with housing needs, as well as being part of the Executive Planning Committee, and providing oversight and support in the form of setup, break down, and transportation for veterans to and from the Stand Down throughout Maricopa County.

This year’s event was the largest Stand Down to date, serving 1510 veterans. Services at the Stand Down ranged from courts waiving fines, to Motor Vehicle Division having cars on site so that veterans could take their driving test to get their license. Haircuts, clothes, food, housing, VA claims, acupuncture, as well as the very popular dog kenneling with grooming services, check-ups, and vaccinations as well as free dog food, were also provided.

IMG_5908Over 600 veterans were assessed by U.S.VETS-Phoenix staff, and nearly 500 Veterans went through the court systems. Compared to last year, there was a promising 20% decrease in the amount of chronically homeless veterans at the Stand Down, and overall veteran homelessness dropped significantly as well. The event was a tremendous success, and was a prime example of how collaboration amongst service providers can bear significant results to ending veteran homelessness.
