U.S.VETS Team Members Receive Suicide Intervention Training

 In Phoenix

U.S.VETS and Mercy Maricopa Integrated Care have teamed up to make a difference in reducing veteran suicide.

On April 27, Mercy Maricopa provided a free Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) to U.S.VETS – Phoenix staff. The training taught staff members to recognize when a veteran may be at risk of suicide and how to work with the veteran to create a plan that will support their immediate safety.  The two-day training will be life saving for the veterans U.S.VETS serves.

“The ASIST training is important because the veteran population today has a high risk of suicides,” says Curtis Namingha, Outreach Specialist. “With this training, we will not only be able to help get veterans off of the street and into safe supportive housing, but we are now able to assist them through life stresses – giving them an outlet to vent their frustrations and problems. We can now assist by directing them to life-saving resources in a crisis situation.”

U.S.VETS – Phoenix would like to thank the team of Mercy Maricopa Integrated Care for providing this essential training to staff and community partners in support of our local veterans.
